The holiday season is an interesting one. It’s when twelve months of hard work are rewarded with time off, which is then split among humans you share DNA, weddings, the odd funeral and of course Christmas with.

It’s also a time when things can get weird, whether that’s a Xmas break up party weird- when a senior workmate declares they’ve been lusting after you since their traveling salesman of a husband never picked up his return ticket six months ago weird.

Or a gran realsing she no long fears death, and decides at Christmas lunch that social etiquette, personal hygiene and the need for clothing are just unnecessary constraints that don’t really mean anything if we all die anyway weird.

Or a Christmas day weird, when you are woken with a knee to the groin, which is connected to a small excited child, bouncing in a desperate attempt to wake up his mother for Christmas presents. As you rub your eyes in one hand and your bruised groin in the other, realising the bed you’re lying in doesn’t belong to you. Nor wife or child and that the groin rubbing is becoming increasingly inappropriate.

As weird as these scenarios can be, like the proverbial cloud they are often lined with a wonderful shine, which are retold and relived as stories shared with family and friends over numerous holiday present and future.
