The Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp running from June 30th to July 4th is one of Australia’s premier and international junior event with competitors travelling from all surfing states of Australia along with international surfers from South Africa, the United State of America, New Zealand, Tahiti and Japan competing for the prestigious title.
With Sunshine and perfect 3 – 4 foot Peaky conditions at Duranbah Beach (on the New South Wales / Queensland border) competitors put on a blistering display of surfing with all heats going down to the wire throughout the Finals day.
In the 12 and Under division Kyuss started a strong campaign winning both his round 1 and 2 heats to see him into the finals day of the event on July 4th.
Kyuss continued his attacking form through the quarters and semi’s securing himself a spot in the 4 man final.
Kyuss King (Byron Bay, NSW) won the 12 and Under Boys division after posting a combined two-wave heat total of 16.23 points (out of a possible 20).
Kyuss King defeated Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW), Billy Harrison (Barwon Heads) and Dextar Muskens (Kirra, Qld) who finished second to fourth respectively.
Kyuss executed critical manoeuvres with speed, power and flow and was rewarded by the judges accordingly, scoring the highest individual wave score of the Finals heat being a 9.00 (out of a possible 10).
A win on the final day of the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp is regarded as a major stepping stone to forging a career as a professional surfer in the years to come, with several past champions now competing at the elite level of the sport. Keep your sunnies on Kyuss because the future looks real bright!
Kyuss said “I’m so stoked with the win!! I came second last year and really wanted to go one better this year and take the title! There are so many amazing surfers competing in this comp and division, so every heat was a battle. I had a plan for each heat and it worked, my boards are going good and I’ve been doing a lot of travel and surfing different waves and I think thats been good for me, I haven’t been doing as many comps this year but there are some key events that I want to be at and this is definitely one of them!! I’m just so stoked to take the title! Yeeeeew!!!!!
