Day 12: South To San Clementi.

Up Early, the Van is packed and we were ready to head south and stay with our friend’s Bird and his son Max at their Riviera beach house San Clementi. We stopped one more time at Malibu on the way through, The waves were super glassy again and not many out… My little bro Rasmus also came out and we scored a siiiick session….

After our surf we did an interview with the local newspaper “the Malibu Times” about our USA road trip…and then it was a quick feed at the Malibu Café and hit the road again heading south. The Traffic was crazy busy so it was a slow trip south along the highway, we stopped off at the Volcom offices near Newport and met up with Jack who had organized us to grab some of the American Volcom range… Ras and I were frothing and scored some siiiick new stuff that we couldn’t get in Volcom OZ.. Yeeeew Jack!!!!! Thanks!!! Next stop was Bird’s house!!!! our new home at Riviera San Clementi.I was amping to stay at Bird’s place, it’s right on the beach and it has a sick beachie right out front so I can just run down and surf anytime, there’s also heaps of other good beach breaks real close by. I watch heaps of dad’s old surf movies and some of my favorite movies are Wave Warriors and Archy, They have video sections from right here where im staying, T- Street, Riviera, Trestles so I new the spots and now I get to surf them…

We finally arrived and Bird called and said we should have dinner at the Hawaiian restaurant Hapa Joe’s just up the road. Biggest Nachos you’ll ever see or attempt to eat. Such good food!!! We had Poke’ which is marinated raw fish and this reminded me of what we ate in Hawaii most days.

Day 13: Riviera.

OK, we are right in the thick of it now… waves all around me and I don’t even have to get in the car….. Up for an early straight out front of house, “Riviera” sooooo glassy!!!! Waves were super fun!!!! There’s big patches of kelp outside the break, so this keeps it glassy on the inside, Nearly every surf I’ve had’s been glassy because of the kelp!! There’s also a small rock island out the front with seals and seal lions on it, you can hear them barking in the morning. Heavy!! I know what eats seals… Anyway I blocked that thought out!!! After my early session out front we went exploring the San Clementi area, cool town! We’re lovin South Cali… Mum and Ras spend the afternoon on the beach out front, Dad and I can see peaks all up the beach towards a left called Cottons which is part of Trestles. Dad and I start the walk… A long walk… The left point isn’t getting any closer… hahaha.. We keep on passing punchy beach breaks but we keep seeing a left ahead that looks good! We finally get to Cottons and it’s fun but now we can see around into Upper Trestles and that looks even better…. so we kept walking and ended up surfing Upper Trestles.. Soooo fun! Dad and I had the outside peak to ourselves.. Somettimes you just luck it and there’s hardly anyone out… We got lucky!!!  We had the best session!!! Surfed all afternoon. Not many photo’s or filming from today as dad was also surfing!!!!!  We did the long walk back along the beach and got back to Birds house for good old Ozzy BBQ. First day in San Clementi was insane!!!!!

Day 14: The Bagel Shack.

Woke up early and ran upstairs to check the surf… Bruce (AKA) Bird was already up and said there were good ones coming through.. Dad, Rasmus and I all bolted out and surfed some fun peaks straight out front (Riviera)…  My brother Ras had the session of his life!!! he did a little aerial… We all saw it… It was small but he launched out and went back in… WHAT!!… Ras was frothing… I asked dad if I had done one at that age and dad said NUP… Ras is coming…. look out!!!!
After our surf Bird suggested we go hit the Bagel Shack and try out the breakfast Bagels… OMG!!! These Bagels ROCK!!! Poppy seed bagel, cream cheese, avo, tomato, lemon pepper.. Boooom sooo gooood!!! After our bagel feast, we decided to go explore further south and check out waves and towns… Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas. Epic surf towns all with fun waves… Me and my little brother also found an original Bones Brigade 80’s shredder, Mike Mcgill’s skate shop in Encinitas!!! Froth.. the old Bones Brigade movies are always being played at our home, especially “In Search Of Animal Chin” we were spewing that Mike wasn’t in his store that day…. Sick shop though… We bought some 80’s nose guards and rail savers to put on our old school Caballero completes… An epic day and mum made it even better with her famous spaghetti Bol for dinner… Loving the USA!!!!

Kyuss on a Riviera right… Uncrowded morning session… Thanks Bird!!!!

Day 15: Lowers and Blue Gate.

Early session at Trestles today!!! it’s Lowers!!!! Out front was super Glassy!!! Swell had pulsed up and our food supplies were packed and ready for the day at Lowers…Lowers was Pumping!!!! So mental…. I got ready soooo quick that I started putting my legs in the arms of my steamer… Not so crowded either!!! Saw local groms shredding out there and Kalani David also turned up and was heading out!!! I surfed for 4 hours, I had the best surf of my trip so far!!! Such a perfect wave, left or right… So smash-able!!! carves, airs, it is a water skate park, it was hard to come in, but I was smashed..…. My little brother Rasmus was surfing a place just near Lowers called 5 – 0 and then moved on into Lowers with dad…. Ras got some screamers.. Dad launched him on a siiiick set…. Looked 4 times overhead.. We were all smashed from the epic Lowers session… The wind picked up just as we were walking back to the car… That made me feel better about leaving… I hate leaving when the waves are still good… Ahhhhh.. Not often your glad to see it go onshore..We had organised to pick up Bird’s son Max from school so Max could show us some skate parks in the area, Max took us to a Park called Blue Gate Laguna Niguel California. This park was insane!!! So big and so many Bowls, hips, halves and quartes and sooooo smooooth!!!! We were the only ones there!!! I couldn’t believe that a park like this was empty?? Back home this would have a million frothers on it 24/7!!!! I had so many runs without a break that I started getting dizzy!! We skated until we were all wet with sweat and had no more energy… It was also a super hot arvo and no wind so we decided to go have a late surf out front of Max’s house at Riviera!!! But that was after a quick stop off to get a double choc chip frappe from Star Bucks!!!! Boooom! We were still hot from the skate so we dared each other to surf the freezing water in just board-shorts… Water temp is cold and the sun was going down so it was like freezing!!! Rasmus, Max and I went in board-shorts, there were guys out surfing in 4 – 3 steamers, hoods and booties, crew were tripping on us for doing it… Max lasted the longest so we chaired Max up the beach for being the biggest cold water maniac!!! Then straight to the Spa to defrost!!!! Such a good day… Surfed Trestles, skated Blue Gate, a late surf at Riviera and then to finish a Hawaiian dinner up at Happa Joes… Such a siiii

Day 16: T – Street.

Today was our last day in San Clementi, This area has been my favourite part of the USA trip!!!! So many waves and skate parks!!!, but there was still a spot I had to surf!!! I’ve seen so many video sections out T-Street so I had to surf it… One of my favourite surfers Archy in the Wave Warriors movie running over the T- Street bridge and surfing this spot!!!  There was always so many good spots breaking so I just hadn’t done T- Street yet and it was only a 5 min walk from the house.. so I got up early and headed down with the whole family… Waves were small but as usual still really fun!!! There were heaps of good grom out and we saw Kalani David again out there ripping! Dad, Ras and I had a heat together… My little Brother Rasmus had his froth and we gave the heat to him!!!! Yeah Ras!!! We had a siiiick session… Dad was a freak and surfed it in board-shorts… It was that cold… ?? We had organised to meet with some of my sponsors (Electric and Skullcandy) today to say hi and bye and check out the new range and brand happenings.   After our meeting with Skullcandy we noticed that the Bagel shack was right there!!!!! How could we not!!! we had to have one last Bagel Shack feast!!! and we did!!! Dad ordered so much!! We were stuffed, half human half bagel… It was late afternoon now so we just relaxed and had a drive around San Clementi area, checking out shops, we found the LOST (Mayhem) surf shop…  some siiiick boards in there!!!

Kyuss on the bridge to T – Street… As seen in his favourite movie Wave Warriors.
