Kyuss King invades the USA BLOG #3

July 12th, 2012

We packed up the car and it was time to head north to our friend Kelly’s house at Santa Barbara and see some more of California’s coast. On the way we stop to check out Santa Monica Pier, we hired bikes at the Pier and mum and dad towed Ras and I on our skateboards along the bike track to Venice Beach. We wanted to check out the Venice strip and all the street performers and also had heard about this huge skate park right on the beach at Venice, Ras and I were frothing to skate it… Once you hit the Venice area you start to see all the street performers… It was epic… we watched Break Dancers, roller skating Jimmy Hendrix, saw a Sunbaking dog and so many other crazy street acts all happening along the strip…

There it was…. skateboards were ready, we found the Venice Beach mega skate park. Crazy big park, more mental than I imagined!!! soooo fun… We met up with a local shredder and fellow Volcom team rider Shane Borland.. Shane was killing the park, massive airs, so good to watch!!! We skated the park all afternoon and then Shane said Malibu had good waves so we finished up skating and headed north to surf… The waves were fun and super Glassy… All the spots we’ve surfed have kelp (seaweed) outside of the banks and this keeps the waves crazy smooth on the inside. Shane and I surfed till dark and then it was time to head further north to our new home for the next few days at Kelly’s house.

My little brother Rasmus soooo stoked we came to Venice Beach!!!

Day 10: Malibu it’s a beach not a long board.

In a new town… Santa Barbra, We cruised around to check out the local beaches, Such a cool place, Waves were real small though, We were told his area is better for waves in winter. Dad got a text from Shane Borland saying fun waves at Malibu so we packed up the Van and bolted south to meet up with Shane and surf. We cruised along the coast Hwy called the PCH and it wasn’t looking good for waves… Flat the whole way along the coast..

We got to Malibu and I couldn’t believe that there were waves, Malibu picks up the swell and it was the only spot from Santa Barbra to south with waves. The waves were super fun, Shane and I surfed all arvo.

The Lampoon vacation was in full effect this afternoon!, As we headed back to Santa Barbra along the PCH hwy Dad missed or took a wrong turn and got real lost. Dad then says shit we’re below empty on the guage. F#%k OMG… Dad was wigging out “Chevy Chase” style… Lost, no fuel and trying to get back to Santa Barbara. We finally got back on the PCH Hwy and there was no sign of a fuel station, just mountains on one side and ocean on the other, Dad took a turn off into Rincon as this looked like it was an area with a fuel station, But NO… we wasted more fuel taking the turn off!!! we found ourselves parked outside the gated community of Rincon point… No one around… Finally the gate opened and a car drove out, dad jumped out of the car to ask if they had some fuel in a jerry can, Dad looked like a freak and the person quickly said no and drove off… Then finally a lady stopped and gave us directions to the nearest fuel stop on the PCH highway, about 7 miles away… That was a long 7 miles with dad freaking!!!,  we were lucky to make it… Lampoon vacation type stuff…. Singing, then stressing and then singing again…haha

Day 11: Ventura Thrifty.

We all got up and rode bikes into the little town of Montecito Santa Barbra for coffee’s and hot chocolates… We then rode down to the beach for a surf check, waves were small again around the Santa Barbra area so we headed south to check out a town called Ventura, I wanted to see where Dane Reynolds surfed and I’d heard the town was cool and had heaps of second hand shops.. Our family loves buying retro gear from second hand stores and Ventura was full of them!!!!

Waves were small at Ventura but definitely surf-able… We checked C – Street and the point, A local told us it picks up more swell further up the point called State or Pipeline. We drove to another car park up the point and it was definitely bigger and worth a surf. Dad Rasmus and I went out and had heaps of fun…It was small but perfect for my little brother Ras!!! The water was real cold and we saw seals cruising around which always freaks you out… The water was even colder than surfing south Cali area… Rasmus got a mean ice cream headache when duck diving and Dad had to assure him it would go away after a few duck dives… Ras got use to the water and got his froth on and owned the session!!!!

After our surf we headed into the township of Ventura… Such a cool town!!! So many second hand shops!!! They’re called thrifty shops and on one street alone there were about 5 within 50 feet… I scored the siiiiickest jacket, we all scored something from the thrifty shops of Ventura…..

We heard there was a cool skate shop in the area called 5 Points so we went searching… It was the coolest skate shop ever, heaps of gear and old-school completes!! Ras and I bought 80′s Steve Cabalero completes. Soooo sick… Had my froth on now go skate and we had been told about a skate park near where we were staying back in Santa Barbara area so we headed north to home and skate…
