Morehu Roberts has made the move to the South Island of New Zealand where he is ripping up the icy cold conditions, hangin out with his girl in front of the fire place sipping wine and working for a local surf store. We hit him with a few question on living on the South island of NZ.
How is life living on the south island of NZ?
Hey boys, yeah living and surfing in the south is a huge wake up call to how cold it realy gets. Just the other morning I woke up and it was snowing.
Have you been getting any waves, what are the waves and temps like down there?
Waves down here are untouched, apart from the local boys no one surfs because its to cold for most. Its good I get uncrowded waves with no one around. At the moment Im in a Xcel 5-4-3 built in hood and 5mm booties for the early mornings then later in the day 4/3 built in hood with 5mm booties.
Do all your bones freeze up?
yeah its nuts I dont like wearing Gloves so my hands end up freezing, but its worth it.
Is there Snow on the hill tops are you walking through snow on the beach?
The day it snowed you had to walk through it to get to the water. the moutains are coverd in snow.
What does the week consist of for Morehu Roberts in the winters of the south island?
Taking care of Exitsurf Shop for the boys but realy all I think about is Planing surf trips finding empty slabs around the place with a few of the local lads down here. Getting good shots and most of all keeping warm.
Some big swell hit down there do you have any stories on any recent large swells to hit the coast? Locations, big waves spots?
Papatowai has been going nuts recently. I have been lucky enough to get time out of work and get some amazing big waves. Only had one close call when our photographer nearly lost his Ski and his life to a 20fter. Other then that we are always carefull and looking out for each other.
Do you have any travel plans for the rest of 2012 or goals or places you want to surf before the new year?
I realy want to put alot of time into big waves and get to Hawaii at the end of this year.
So keeping healthy fit and injury free to then.
