A Whole Heap Of 'Head Noise' In Sydney
We held a secret screening at the Steyne in Manly Friday night for Noa's latest flick, 'Head Noise'. Noa and Mikey Mallalieu (the man behind the lens) have been working on the edit since Noa packed that heavily rumoured bomb at Backdoor during the shootout back in January. "It all came together really quick, started off in Hawaii and we only got back from Bali [the final trip for the film] two weeks ago." Mikey told Stab the morning of the prem. "Some of these sessions Noa was surfing up to 8 hours a day, he won't stop until it's done." It's 14-ish minutes long and Noa modestly agreed "it's the best [he's] put out" post-premiere. Noa's overtly conscious of the edits he releases as well, ensuring that his latest output surpasses, or at the very last, matches his previous edit. And you can be sure that 'Head Noise' surpasses 'Pulp' in more than just running length. "Noa has a lot of input into the editing process, he knows what he wants from the waves included, up to the soundtrack." Mikey continued. "It was initially intended to be longer – with interviews and profiles included – but the film turned out better this way." It starts on the North Shore, and ends off with footage compiled over two separate trips to West Aus. I won't throw any spoilers in there at the moment, but for those too eager to wait until it's online release August 2nd, there's a string of US dates in the next couple of weeks. I'd fill in the gaps surrounding the above images, but they're better left unadorned and unexplained, and the moments which weren't captured on film are probably better left residing in the back of our minds than out in public anyway. All I will say is the only negative was the exuberant cost of an Uber back over that bridge... And for Noa and Mikey, a 7am flight from Sydney back to the Gold Coast. For those of you over the pond in the U.S. of A, the film's worldwide premiere is happening on July 12th in LA, followed by a stint of other West and East coast tour dates – which you can scan below. West Coast July 12 - Los Angeles: Zebulon Cafe July 13 - San Diego: South Coast Surf Shop July 15 - Costa Mesa: Volcom HQ East Coast July 24 - Asbury Park, New Jersey: Asbury Lanes July 25 - Long Island, New York: Unsound Surf Shop July 26 - New York City: TBD July 27 - Newport, Rhode Island: TBD July 28 - New Hampshire: 3S Artspace Words by JAKE EMBREY - Stab Magazine Photos by @kanegrosvenorphoto Check out the Volcom x Noa Deane collection HERE » Watch the official trailer HERE »

SCOTTY JAMES OLYMPIC PODIUM PARTY
If you were in Australia over the past few weeks and you happened to turn on the TV or pick up a newspaper, no doubt you would have heard the name Scotty James more than a few times. Whilst you were enjoying the Aussie Summer, Scotty was in a very cold Korea representing Australia at the highest level in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Holding the Aussie flag and leading out the rest of the Australian team, Scotty made Australia proud. Most of Australia tuned in to support Scotty, embracing all those emotions as he competed in the Pipe, giving Australian’s the feeling of being right there on the slopes amongst the Korean snow. Scotty left Australia, a bloke from Warrandyte, VIC and came home a hero, becoming an Aussie legend to all those Australians that followed his journey to Korea, where he snagged Bronze in Men’s Pipe. To Volcom, Scotty has always been a hero and to show their gratitude to Scotty, whether they are Aussie, American or from anywhere in this extreme sports world - Volcom OZ and Easey Street Group put on a party to welcome back and congratulate Scotty in a way like no other. With Scotty’s family and friends on the guest list, along with Volcom family, you would have wished you were in Melbourne that night. As you enter the Easey Street venue, you were greeted with a glass of celebratory champagne from a bar that didn’t go dry the whole night. Tasty local beers were supplied by Goose Island and even tastier burgers from Easyes, accompanied by the best potato gems I have ever sampled. Our senses were being treated. At this stage, Scotty was definitely the most popular man in the house, with everyone there wanting to get a hold of that Olympic Bronze medal. I can tell you it was more than impressive, it’s the real deal with some solid weight behind it.  As the night went on and those attending got merrier and merrier, Volcom’s Shane Azar had a few surprises in store for Scotty. DJ - Sean James put the music on hold and all turned to the big screen where a mix of absolute legends across all sports congratulated Scotty on his Bronze from abroad. Just watching Scotty’s reactions to the video showed you just how special it was to him, a very touching piece indeed. To keep the emotions going, Shane presented Scotty with a one of a kind custom ring, crafted right here in Melbourne by Adam from Broken Lock. Unlike the Bronze medal, it could be worn everyday as a memento of Scotty’s achievement. A toast was had in the form of a “Garry Ablett”, a popular drink with the Volcom Snow Team (shot of coffee slammed into a beer then skulled in one hit). And then the madness began. The madness that is Barbarian... A metal band not from this century. Smoke, fire, blood sweat and some tears, a Barbarian show is like no other. If you were not Metal before the show, you are Metal now! The crowd participation was incredible, on what capped off an amazing night to celebrate an outstanding achievement by Scotty James. Words & Photos: Andrew Mapstone Party Video by: Neihana Tonkin Thanks to: Easey Street Group, Ivy Miller, Will Bowden, Pat Moore, Seth Hout, Jeff Kabigting, Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson, Tyler Allenvo, Dylan Alito, Simon Barratt, Arto Saari, Pat Barraza, Adam from Broken Lock, Easey Cheese Burgers, Goose Island Beer, Barbarian, Ryan Imegart, Todd Hymel, Alison Thomas, Nick Boon

FINALS DAY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2018 VOLCOM PIPE PRO
Joshua Moniz defeats Jamie O'Brien, Weslley Dantas and Cam Richards to win the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro! Finals Day at the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro welcomed everyone with pumping 8-12 foot Pipeline and Backdoor with light offshore winds. The swell backed off a bit from the day before, which was a good thing, and competitors were eager to hit the lineup as countless epic Pipeline barrels graced the lineup all morning. We started off Finals Day with Round 5 and saw multiple 7 and 8-point rides drop without hesitation. Cam Richards nabbed an amazing 8.10 barrel at Pipe where he stood up comfortably and got blown out with the spit. In the same heat, Joan Duru was behind in the count until the last few seconds when a solid wave came in and scored a 7.70 to advance into the Quarterfinals along with Cam. Noa Deane and Joshua Moniz each solidified their spot in the Quarterfinals with high 7-point rides, and Alvaro Malpartida had two excellent 7-point rides to advance along with fellow Peruvian Joaquin Del Castillo. As the round continued, Marco Giorgi bagged an impressive 9.50 and 8.50 to hold the highest heat score for Round 5, while Carlos Munoz received a perfect 10-point ride for a freight-train right at Backdoor. The Quarterfinals were set and the field was stacked with some of Pipeline’s finest barrel riders. Cam Richards continued to amaze everyone with his exceptional barrel riding, dropping an 8.87 on a heavy Pipeline bomb, while Noa Deane secured his advancement in the Semifinals with a 8.17. Heat 2 of the Quarterfinals featured Jack Robinson who was destined to make the finals, but came up short after breaking two of his boards in the heat. That left Joan Duru and Joshua Moniz into advancing positions after each grabbing two solid scores in the 8 and 6-point ranges, respectively. Finishing out the Quarters saw Weslley Dantas, Alvaro Malpartida, Jamie O’Brien, and Mitch Parkinson into advancing positions as the waves continued to fire on all cylinders. While Weslley and Alvaro each had one good score under their belts, Jamie O’Brien was able to find a 7.50 and 8.50 to complete his Quarterfinal heat with a comfortable 16-point total. The Semifinals saw a fury of waves as Pipeline continued to deliver. Picked up right where he left off, Cam Richards dropped a 9.0 on a deep Pipeline left, and also grabbed a 8.80 to solidify his spot in the finals. Joshua Moniz was also able to find two lefts at Pipe to slingshot himself into the final four. Semifinal two included Pipeline specialist Jamie O’Brien who, to no surprise, found a gem of a wave with a 9.17 at Pipeline, and followed it up with a last minute 4.50 to secure his advancement. While Mitch Parkinson nearly matched Jamie’s excellent score, he was unable to find a backup which left the door open for Weslley Dantas who had a 6.0 and 7.27, marking his name in the prestigious final. With an amazing week of great Pipeline and Backdoor, we were set for the finals of the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro, and what a final it was. Joshua Moniz, Jamie O'Brien, Weslley Dantas and Cam Richards hit the lineup to non-stop firing Pipeline. Jamie got a quick start with a 7.43, but it wasn't until a few waves later when he dropped a perfect 10-point ride on a gem of a Pipeline wave. With a solid two-wave total already, it seemed like he had the final in his bag. Waslley Dantas and Cam Richards snagged a couple mid-range scores, but it was Joshua Moniz who opened up with an 8.83 and ended up finding a 8.73 towards the end of the final to secure the win. Congratulations to all finalists and competitors throughout the event for their hard-charging efforts and spectacular showing for the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro!
