A Whole Heap Of 'Head Noise' In Sydney

We held a secret screening at the Steyne in Manly Friday night for Noa's latest flick, 'Head Noise'. Noa and Mikey Mallalieu (the man behind the lens) have been working on the edit since Noa packed that heavily rumoured bomb at Backdoor during the shootout back in January. "It all came together really quick, started off in Hawaii and we only got back from Bali [the final trip for the film] two weeks ago." Mikey told Stab the morning of the prem. "Some of these sessions Noa was surfing up to 8 hours a day, he won't stop until it's done." It's 14-ish minutes long and Noa modestly agreed "it's the best [he's] put out" post-premiere. Noa's overtly conscious of the edits he releases as well, ensuring that his latest output surpasses, or at the very last, matches his previous edit. And you can be sure that 'Head Noise' surpasses 'Pulp' in more than just running length. "Noa has a lot of input into the editing process, he knows what he wants from the waves included, up to the soundtrack." Mikey continued. "It was initially intended to be longer – with interviews and profiles included – but the film turned out better this way." It starts on the North Shore, and ends off with footage compiled over two separate trips to West Aus. I won't throw any spoilers in there at the moment, but for those too eager to wait until it's online release August 2nd, there's a string of US dates in the next couple of weeks. I'd fill in the gaps surrounding the above images, but they're better left unadorned and unexplained, and the moments which weren't captured on film are probably better left residing in the back of our minds than out in public anyway. All I will say is the only negative was the exuberant cost of an Uber back over that bridge... And for Noa and Mikey, a 7am flight from Sydney back to the Gold Coast. For those of you over the pond in the U.S. of A, the film's worldwide premiere is happening on July 12th in LA, followed by a stint of other West and East coast tour dates – which you can scan below. West Coast July 12 - Los Angeles: Zebulon Cafe July 13 - San Diego: South Coast Surf Shop July 15 - Costa Mesa: Volcom HQ East Coast July 24 - Asbury Park, New Jersey: Asbury Lanes July 25 - Long Island, New York: Unsound Surf Shop July 26 - New York City: TBD July 27 - Newport, Rhode Island: TBD July 28 - New Hampshire: 3S Artspace Words by JAKE EMBREY - Stab Magazine Photos by @kanegrosvenorphoto Check out the Volcom x Noa Deane collection HERE » Watch the official trailer HERE »

"Relentless" Surf Movie Starring Dusty Payne Follows the Highs + Lows of His Professional Surfing Career

On January 8, 2018, Dusty Payne suffered a near-fatal wipeout at Backdoor on the North Shore of Oahu. After hitting the reef, Dusty was knocked unconscious and didn’t surface for five waves. After being hospitalized with a broken jaw and multiple skull fractures, Dusty underwent surgery and spent months recovering. This captivating film documents Dusty’s surfing accident and his road to recovery and spotlights his career of highs and lows and his relentless love for the sport of surfing.   "I just hope that I’m able to inspire other people to not give up on their goals because of a setback, no matter how dark times may seem."   ABOUT RELENTLESS: Dusty Payne is one of the most dynamic surfers of his generation, but his path in the world of professional surfing has been far from easy. His career has been a roller coaster of competitive successes and failures, era-defining video parts, heartbreaking injuries and inspiring comebacks. Set against the backdrop of his near-fatal wipeout at Backdoor in January 2018, including high-action surfing footage from places like Portugal, Oahu, and Maui (including Honolua Bay), Relentless tells the story of a surfer who has been through it all and keeps coming back stronger than ever.

VOLCOM ZIP TECH® JACKET-TO-PANT SYSTEM KEEPS SNOW OUT

CONNECT FROM THE LEFT, ZIP TO THE RIGHT, COVER & SHRED! It's no secret, being cold and wet is the easiest way to ruin a good day on the hill. And let's face it, everyone falls down, slides out, sits on an icy/wet chairlift and so on. It is snowboarding after all, and snow is going to try to find a way up your jacket and down your pants, soaking your base layers making it difficult to regulate your body temperature and in general cause you discomfort. Which is why over a decade ago the design team at Volcom developed the innovative Zip Tech® "zip your jacket to your pants" system for Volcom Outerwear as the first line of defence in keeping your body dry and your stoke high. Volcom Outerwear Zip Tech®   Inside and around the bottom of Volcom Outerwear Zip Tech® jackets is an inner powder skirt with a zipper running around the skirt that connects to a corresponding zipper track that sits just below the belt line of Volcom Outerwear Zip Tech® pants. Once connected, this hidden interface is the best barrier against snow finding its way into your outerwear. No other method of attaching a powder skirt or waist gator to your pants, be it through use of a series of buttons and clips, is as impenetrable to snow or offers the freedom of easy layering underneath as the patented Volcom Zip Tech® system does. Cross compatible between Volcom Outerwear jacket and pants styles as long as both feature Zip Tech®, the system also works across sizes, so that a small Zip Tech® jacket will work with a large Zip Tech® pant.

My City - Mar del Plata, Argentina - Milton Martinez | Volcom Skate
My City is a Volcom Skate video series showcasing the Latin American Skate Team as they take us through their hometowns, showing us where they grew up skating and what struggles they had to overcome along the way. In episode nine of My City we visit 27-year old Milton Martinez from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Mar del Plata, Argentina is a very warm, crowded place during the summers, and typically a lonely and cold place during the winters. Also known as the surf capital in Argentina, Mar del Plata is one of the most visited towns in Argentina during the summer for tourists. With this influx of tourism every year, there is new infrastructure in the city, and thus, new skate spots. You would find most of the spots near the coast, however, there are some spots farther inland that are worth the drive. As we know surf and skate go hand-in-hand, and it’s because of that, skateboarding in Mar del Plata has a lot of heritage, and that’s why most of the best skaters of Argentina, such as Milton Martinez, come from this city. A few years ago, the government learned skateboarding is a growing sport in the city and built skate parks throughout the area to support the activity, and the growth has been exponential and well-received among the locals. Milton Martinez in his hometown of Mar del Plata, Argentina Shop Volcom Stone Made Jeans & Chinos » Milton Martinez and his family have true skateboarding roots, starting with his parents. His dad was a well-known skateboarder in his prime, and his mom owns a local skate shop in Mar del Plata called Social Skate Shop, which has been in the family for years. We could fairly say it’s impossible for you to walk around the city and not see a skateboarder rolling around on his board. Milton’s two younger brothers also skate, and rip, and definitely tear up the local skate scene in Mar del Plata Between the skate-friendly city and authorities, the lively beach scene, and amazing food, for some, it’s a dream place to live. Given the city’s proximity to the ocean, the port is a great place to find good seafood restaurants. But, without a doubt, if you’re visiting Argentina, you must have an “asado” which is an outdoor Argentinian grill with your friends, similar to barbecues in the United States. Milton Martinez Summer in Mar del Plata, Argentina is the best time if you want to let loose and party a bit. The day has more daylight and the new bars zone next to the beach is the best if you want to dance, drink and watch the sunset (or sunrise) on the beach. With all this action, the police are usually respectful and don't get too aggressive unless something crazy happens. They understand the city and understand skateboarders, and skateboarders understand them. If skaters are caught trespassing by the police, the skaters are typically just told to leave with no serious tickets or repercussions. Growing up as a skateboarder in Mar del Plata, Argentina is not so bad. Plenty of skateparks and city structures, and a welcoming society. With guys like Milton Martinez going pro and inspiring a new wave of up-and-coming skateboarders from the area, you can be sure this isn't the last time you'll hear of Mar del Plata.   MUSIC: Horcas - "Punto Final" Horcas - "En La Jaula" PRODUCED BY: Diego Espinoza FILMED BY: Leonardo Mercado, Ivan Kavaliauskas, Jonatan Luna, Salvador D' elia, Facundo Bertelli, Lucio Sandoval EDITED BY: Doceseis   Watch Episode 1 with Jhancarlos Gonzalez Watch Episode 2 with Jesus Munoz Watch Episode 3 with Kervin Miranda Watch Episode 4 with Giovanni Vianna   FOLLOW THE STONE... VOLCOM TO THE FAMILY HOCKEY DAD
A naturally awesome partnership. Volcom love Hockey Dad. To say they thrashed Hockey Dad’s latest album release “Blend Inn” at Volcom HQ would be a monumental understatement. Played daily, and maybe for a while there hourly on the daily; you could pretty much give any Volcom staffer a Hockey Dad lyrical pop quiz and get a full chorus back in tune, on time and with a smile. The pre-mentioned penchant for the hourly HD listen over at Volcom HQ is exactly how this great partnership got all fired up. On a toe tapping session of Hockey Dad listening the Volcom crew got talking about how rad it would be to flow the HD dudes some gear, “we owe ‘em that much”...And so, into their DM’s Volcom did slide. An instant bonding over a favorite comment of “Shitchyeah” (all one word or it isn’t anywhere near as good) and a few very comical DM exchanges got a huge selection of Volcom Tee Shirts & Denim sent Hockey Dad’s way.  The duo was stoked with their pack and couldn’t believe the haul “you guys are nutcases! Ya sent down half the fkn shop! Thnx so much for the gear. It’s the best we’ve looked in years.” Guitarist Zach Stephenson and Drummer Billy Fleming, the two best mates that make up the incredibly likeable, relatable and infectiously awesome sound that is Hockey Dad wore the Volcom gear on their Album launch and then on their sold out national tour. Volcom loved seeing HD shred up stages in the clothes that looked so right it was as if they were designed just for them. Volcom & Hockey Dad went next level; beers were had, meals shared, gigs attended and now here we all are with an extremely happy announcement of a naturally awesome partnership. The decision to join Volcom wasn’t a hard one for Hockey Dad with the likes of life long idol; Surfer Ozzie Wright and fellow Musician and Surfer Noa Deane on the team, then there’s the Volcom history rich in ties with bands they love like Grinspoon and Pennywise. Hockey Dad knew they were at home with Volcom. Hockey Dad Play At The Metro, Sydney. Growing up on Australia’s East Coast in a little town called Windang NSW; Zach & Billy “Best mates first, band mates second” grew up playing music and surfing together. The title of Hockey Dad’s debut, “Boronia,” comes from the street where they once lived and began playing music together. The boys have played music together, dreamed together and made a reality of their passion together. They are the definition of Volcom brand ethos: True To This. “True To This” defines the irrational pursuit of following your passion. The relentless ambition to do what makes you feel most alive. Volcom proudly supports innovators and creative spirits and are deeply committed to self-expression. Hockey Dad as Volcom Brand Ambassadors sees them continuing to wear Volcom clothing on tours, joining in photoshoots, events, parties, surfing with the team and becoming part of the Volcom family; a partnership worthy of a collective “SHITCHYEAH”.
