DAY 3 HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2018 VOLCOM PIPE PRO

Day 3 of Volcom Pipe Pro opened up with solid 6-8 foot WNW Swell at Pipe and Backdoor, providing competitors with excellent surf all day.

February 2, 2018 - Friday morning welcomed the Volcom Pipe Pro with a solid swell that held from the evening before, opting for perfect Pipeline and Backdoor offshore barrels. The swell throughout the morning was relentless with non-stop high-scoring waves dropping from the very first heat of the morning. Jack Robinson wowed the crowd with multiple keepers, most notably, a 9.07 Backdoor barrel where he had to pump inside of the tube to make a clean exit.

As we continued through Round 3, we saw great scoring waves from guys like Evan Valiere, Elijah Gates, Mason Ho, Ian Walsh, Brent Dorrington, Koa Rothman, and more. But with great rides, there are bound to be crazy wipeouts, and there were. A handful of surfers packed some heavy closeout barrels and some ended up resorted to the dreaded late-pin-needle air drop.

Koa Smith started off Round 4 in his usual fashion, dropping a 9.27 and 8.87 to comfortably advance to Round 5. Joan Duru also packed an impressive 8.57 on a late-drop Backdoor barrel and backed it up with a solid left at Pipeline to secure his spot in the next round. But it was Cam Richards who stole the show on his backhand with two incredible tube rides at Backdoor. While down in the count with just under 11 minutes to go, Cam nabbed a clean 9.83 then quickly followed it up with a perfect 10-point ride.

We finished off the day with Heat 6 of Round 4 to an incessant flood of waves and great conditions. We saw Jack Robinson pick up right where he left off and scored an 8-point ride on his first Backdoor attempt and followed it up with a near-perfect score of a 9.93, juggling between a foam ball and super deep positioning on the wave.

FIRST SESH IN CJ COLLINS' BACKYARD
Like any 14 year-old skater, having a backyard bowl to skate anytime you want seem like an absolute dream! The skatepark itself was a 3 year journey, CJ and his dad started digging up their backyard when he was only 10 years old. After catching wind of it's completion we decided to get a small crew together and head over there to check it out. Pedro Barros was in town and hanging out with Omar Hassan hitting all sorts of parks around town, so it was a no brainer to get them on the sesh. Fellow Toy Machine teammate, Collin Provost is always down to shred, so he met us at CJ's too. We also hear that the park had a built in grill too so picking up some grillables was a must. Our Sunday sesh at CJ's was shaping quite nicely! We called CJ up to get more on the process. He was in the middle of doing his homework, so he wasn't too bummed on chatting with us for a few minutes. Watch the video above and read more below for the full scoop: When did you decide to make a skatepark in your backyard? We started digging up the backyard like 3 years ago. We didn't really know what we were going to do, but then, not too long ago, we were just like fuck it! We're going to build it. Did you have a design? or did they design it for you? What did you want in it? Well yeah, we like didn't even design it. We drew it on a piece of napkin or something like that. Then we ended up having Remy hook us up with his guy (Dug Ketterman of DugOut Design Studios, who also helped design the Volcom HQ skatepark) to do the 3D render or whatever it's called. How long has it been in the backyard now? It's been in the backyard for like 3 or 4 months now. What was your first reaction to seeing it and skating it? Dude, I was so stoked! I couldn't frickin' believe it, I was so hyped! Who else has skated it beside yourself? Any other skaters stop by yet? All of the builders have skated it. We had a little BBQ when it was done and had a few people over, but not a lot of people have skated it yet really. So it's not too blown out yet? No, not yet. Were Collin, Pedro and Omar kind of the first pro's to skate it? Pretty much, yeah they were the first ones to really skate it, besides me. How often do you use that BBQ? It was looking pretty clean when we rolled through... We only used it like once before you guys did. That was on New Years. How stoked were you to drive the van? Dude! I was so stoked! I was ready to ram anything and everything! We should have had you do more than one take... (laughs) Yeah! I would have too much fun. I feel like it would have gotten dangerous pretty quick. You're coming to Florida on the next Volcom 'Road Rager' trip right? Yeah, it's like the end of February, beginning of March right? Yup! We have a good crew. Have you ever been to Florida before? I've been once like 4 years ago for Tampa Am. I think that was the first time Volcom ever flew me out to a contest. Oh yeah, damn, 4 years ago, you were like 10 years old. Did you enter last year? I didn't go last year, but I think I'm going this year, it's going to be rad. I just watched that Transworld Skateboarding video of you and the Toy Machine dudes in China, looks like you got some epic footage. That wasn't your first time to China though, right? You've been there for the Vans Park Series before right? Yeah, but the Toy Machine trip was before I went there for the Vans Park Series, So yeah, the Toy Machine trip was my first time to China. Oh rad! What was that like? It was sick, but we were in the middle of nowhere, just going to random spots in China. It was brutal, I was sick for like the first 2 weeks! I don't know what what was wrong, My eyes felt so dry that I felt like I just needed to sleep, I also had a gnarly fever. Did Collin take care of you? They would just go skate spots, I would just chill at the hotel. They were like "Oh you'll be fine, just stay in bed." When I was feeling better, I would go out and skate in the morning but by the end of the sesh I would just be dusted! What else do you have going on? Um, not much right now, just a lot of homework. might meet up with a couple homies this weekend. Not sure what we're doing yet. So if you're homeschooled, what grade are you in? how does that work? Well, I'm in 9th grade, I don't know if that's different than regular school. Sound about right... Yeah, I'm in 9th grade but really suck at school. I only have one F. That's in Biology. What pants you running these days? Right now, I'm wearing just the Frickin' Modern Chinos, I've been trying out some denim, I think the Solvers, but I usually just run the chinos. What would your dream sesh be in you park? If you could have any 3 dudes, who would it be? Um... I would say Grant Taylor, Collin's already been here, that was my dream! (laughs) I'd like to see Dustin here too, I would like to see what he could do, he'd just fly around and bail alot, that would be rad. (laughs). What's the deal with that drainage grate you have in there too? That thing is sick! Yeah! That was me and my dad's idea. One of my dad’s friends does metal work and he did it for us. It's pretty sick, we wanted to do one for the BBQ grill too. All right, well I'll let you get back to your homework, don't want anymore F's. Thanks for your time bud! For sure dude! Later!

FINALS DAY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2018 VOLCOM PIPE PRO
Joshua Moniz defeats Jamie O'Brien, Weslley Dantas and Cam Richards to win the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro! Finals Day at the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro welcomed everyone with pumping 8-12 foot Pipeline and Backdoor with light offshore winds. The swell backed off a bit from the day before, which was a good thing, and competitors were eager to hit the lineup as countless epic Pipeline barrels graced the lineup all morning. We started off Finals Day with Round 5 and saw multiple 7 and 8-point rides drop without hesitation. Cam Richards nabbed an amazing 8.10 barrel at Pipe where he stood up comfortably and got blown out with the spit. In the same heat, Joan Duru was behind in the count until the last few seconds when a solid wave came in and scored a 7.70 to advance into the Quarterfinals along with Cam. Noa Deane and Joshua Moniz each solidified their spot in the Quarterfinals with high 7-point rides, and Alvaro Malpartida had two excellent 7-point rides to advance along with fellow Peruvian Joaquin Del Castillo. As the round continued, Marco Giorgi bagged an impressive 9.50 and 8.50 to hold the highest heat score for Round 5, while Carlos Munoz received a perfect 10-point ride for a freight-train right at Backdoor. The Quarterfinals were set and the field was stacked with some of Pipeline’s finest barrel riders. Cam Richards continued to amaze everyone with his exceptional barrel riding, dropping an 8.87 on a heavy Pipeline bomb, while Noa Deane secured his advancement in the Semifinals with a 8.17. Heat 2 of the Quarterfinals featured Jack Robinson who was destined to make the finals, but came up short after breaking two of his boards in the heat. That left Joan Duru and Joshua Moniz into advancing positions after each grabbing two solid scores in the 8 and 6-point ranges, respectively. Finishing out the Quarters saw Weslley Dantas, Alvaro Malpartida, Jamie O’Brien, and Mitch Parkinson into advancing positions as the waves continued to fire on all cylinders. While Weslley and Alvaro each had one good score under their belts, Jamie O’Brien was able to find a 7.50 and 8.50 to complete his Quarterfinal heat with a comfortable 16-point total. The Semifinals saw a fury of waves as Pipeline continued to deliver. Picked up right where he left off, Cam Richards dropped a 9.0 on a deep Pipeline left, and also grabbed a 8.80 to solidify his spot in the finals. Joshua Moniz was also able to find two lefts at Pipe to slingshot himself into the final four. Semifinal two included Pipeline specialist Jamie O’Brien who, to no surprise, found a gem of a wave with a 9.17 at Pipeline, and followed it up with a last minute 4.50 to secure his advancement. While Mitch Parkinson nearly matched Jamie’s excellent score, he was unable to find a backup which left the door open for Weslley Dantas who had a 6.0 and 7.27, marking his name in the prestigious final. With an amazing week of great Pipeline and Backdoor, we were set for the finals of the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro, and what a final it was. Joshua Moniz, Jamie O'Brien, Weslley Dantas and Cam Richards hit the lineup to non-stop firing Pipeline. Jamie got a quick start with a 7.43, but it wasn't until a few waves later when he dropped a perfect 10-point ride on a gem of a Pipeline wave. With a solid two-wave total already, it seemed like he had the final in his bag. Waslley Dantas and Cam Richards snagged a couple mid-range scores, but it was Joshua Moniz who opened up with an 8.83 and ended up finding a 8.73 towards the end of the final to secure the win. Congratulations to all finalists and competitors throughout the event for their hard-charging efforts and spectacular showing for the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro! DAY 4 HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2018 VOLCOM PIPE PRO
Saturday at the Volcom Pipe Pro opened with big and challenging 12-15 foot WNW swell, putting even the best surfers at pipeline to the test. February 3, 2018 - It was a quick decision to call the contest ON this morning at the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro with big, yet challenging, 12-15 foot wave conditions sweeping the Pipeline and Backdoor lineups. With the swell increasing overnight, and a consistent feed of waves pounding the shore, competitors needed to approach the lineup with a different strategy than the days before. "Twos or tens" was what some competitors set out for, while others attempted to scrap some smaller ones on the inside in fear of not being able to find any rideable waves in their heat. Noa Deane and John John Florence battled it out in Heat 8 of Round 4, but it was Noa Deane who prevailed with snagging a solid 5.53 wave at Pipeline. Conditions were difficult, and with that, we saw some big seeds go down which caused some uproars from the crowds. Two-time World Champion John John Florence was left searching for a 1.80 score, but couldn’t find a wave in time and ended up losing out to Noa Deane and Robson Santos. We also saw some Pipe specialists unfortunately get eliminated from the event who were sure bets to advance: Sebastian Zietz, Balaram Stack, Koa Rothman, Seth Moniz, and Kalani David. With competition progressing through the morning, we continued to see low-scoring heats with totals not reaching past Soli Bailey’s 7.70 two-wave total from the first heat of the morning. But things quickly turned around in Heat 13 when Ezekiel Lau dropped an 8-point ride on an insane left at Pipeline, which started a recurring trend.
DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2018 VOLCOM PIPE PRO
Large swell filled in overnight supplying competitors with classic backdoor and pipeline barrels. February 1, 2018 - Waves and competition heated up for Day 2 at the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro with a new solid swell which provided high-scoring and high-impact heats. We saw the first perfect 10 of the event by Hawaii’s Finn McGill and numerous eight and nine-point rides from a variety of the competitors. The Volcom Last Chance Qualifier (VLCQ) ran just after Round 2 and featured some of Pipeline’s best barrel riders and legends of the sport which included Derek Ho, Gavin Beschen, Dave Wassel, Kalani Chapman, Jamie O’Brien, Takayuki Wakita, and Jonah Morgan, along with Puerto Rico’s Mauro Diaz who packed a huge Backdoor closeout in the dying seconds of the heat. But it was Pipeline local Jamie O’Brien who stole the show with a 9.33 steamer-of-a-wave at Backdoor. Jamie, who won the very first Volcom Pipe Pro back in 2010, is fired up to enter the main event and compete against friends like John John Florence who he’s battled with in memorable heats at this event.
