DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2018 VOLCOM PIPE PRO

Large swell filled in overnight supplying competitors with classic backdoor and pipeline barrels.

February 1, 2018 - Waves and competition heated up for Day 2 at the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro with a new solid swell which provided high-scoring and high-impact heats. We saw the first perfect 10 of the event by Hawaii’s Finn McGill and numerous eight and nine-point rides from a variety of the competitors.

The Volcom Last Chance Qualifier (VLCQ) ran just after Round 2 and featured some of Pipeline’s best barrel riders and legends of the sport which included Derek Ho, Gavin Beschen, Dave Wassel, Kalani Chapman, Jamie O’Brien, Takayuki Wakita, and Jonah Morgan, along with Puerto Rico’s Mauro Diaz who packed a huge Backdoor closeout in the dying seconds of the heat. But it was Pipeline local Jamie O’Brien who stole the show with a 9.33 steamer-of-a-wave at Backdoor. Jamie, who won the very first Volcom Pipe Pro back in 2010, is fired up to enter the main event and compete against friends like John John Florence who he’s battled with in memorable heats at this event.

The waves continued to pound the beach throughout the day as we finished through Heat 4 of Round 3.

Scotty James Half Pipe Jam
On Wednesday Scotty James and Torgeir Bergrem brought to life an epic Half Pipe jam at Perisher. The weather turned on us but that didn’t stop the good times! The team consisted of Scotty James, Torgier Bergrem, Joss Mcalpin, Super grom Valentino Gusseli and pro skater Reece Warren. Torgeir soaring through this Method. We had loads of prizes being awarded for stylish methods, handplants and even the oldest competitor in the pipe. The turn out was amazing with the crowd ranging from kids as young as 5 to people in their 50’s. Scotty James airborne with Torgeir high on his heels. Young guns were sending themselves down the pipe all day. Winners are grinners. Scotty and Torgeir spent the day awarding the prizes and hanging with their fans. A big thank you to Perisher resort and their Terrain Parks team for getting the pipe ready.

Volcom Welcomes Sam Atkins To The Team
VOLCOM WELCOMES SAM ATKINS TO THE SKATE TEAM Sam has been making a name for himself over the past couple years both on and off the board. He is mature beyond his years with Skateboarding to that matches. Sam has a sharp technique with impressive pop and control on a Skateboard, which he navigates across all landscapes. Whether its tall, long, high or steep, Sam has it covered. Hailing from Geelong Victoria he has honed his skills at his family’s indoor Skatepark, which has always been a favourite stop for the team when in the region. We couldn’t be happier to welcome Sam to the Skate team. We have spent many hours already in the van and on the road and one thing is for sure… Sam is Van Proof and a family member to the team already. My mum reckons I’m handsome, funny and domestically disabled. Noa Deane's "Head Noise" is a Cinematic Surf Movie from Filmmaker Mikey Mallalieu
Demystifying the noise within his own head and destroying the noise of the stereotype which surrounds him. Yes, Noa Deane is a freakish aerialist, but he also charges tubes of consequence. Yes, he is one of the most innovative surfers in the world today, but he is also steeped in a deep respect for his heritage. Yes, he has been characterized as a punk kid, but he is thoughtful and down to earth. Yes, his life might look like an easy dream ride, but he has demons to slay! This movie is a direct reflection of Noa Deane. It's a candid look at one of surfing's most exciting characters through high-action, heavy-charging, avant-garde surfing for the new age, documented unmistakably through the lens of filmmaker Mikey Mallalieu.
