Week 12: Flying Hair "Tantrum" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club

Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th.

Week 12: Flying Hair - "Tantrum"

Since 2014 Flying Hair has been smashing together different influences and steadily crafting their own unique sound. The story starts with two friends jamming in Los Angeles. "Bobby (Martin, bass and vocals) and Kurt (Mangum, guitar) had been jamming for fun with Kurt," says drummer Matthew Clark. "They asked if I wanted to jam." With the additioin of Matthew, Bobby switched instruments and picked up the bass. "We had an immediate chemistry and pretty quickly wrote a bunch of songs. We also spent a lot of time improvising and finding our sound." Bryan Fox joined Flying Hair on synths in 2015. "He has added a lot to the sound," says Clark.

Their first release, Haunted Hangout II, dropped in April 2015 on Clarks's own Casual Acid Tea label, first as a cassette and later on vinyl. In the meantime, the band has been fast at work on a second album titled Night Fight.

Matthew has spent some time at Volcom Studio previously. "I've recorded twice before at the Volcom Studio, first for the Premonition 13 debut 7" and later for the Premonition 13 full length sessions which also produced the material for the Earthless/Radio Moscow split," explains Matthew. "Brian [Mckinley, engineer at Volcom Studio] is super adept at getting good sounds quickly and creating a vibe for creativity and experimentation." This vibe worked for their Cyber Singles session. "Recording this session with Flying Hair, I was pleased, but not surprised, at how quickly we got good sounds and knocked the session out," he continues, "Plus we had fun with the green screen video aspect of that session."

To describe Tantrum, Matthew says, "This song is about losing your cool. Bobby wrote the words and we all wrote the music together. It has kind of a space punk feel." You may have already heard this song in Volcom surf videos. "We love all the support we have gotten from Volcom and we love seeing our jams soundtracking surf videos," says Clark.

VOLCOM TO THE FAMILY HOCKEY DAD
A naturally awesome partnership. Volcom love Hockey Dad. To say they thrashed Hockey Dad’s latest album release “Blend Inn” at Volcom HQ would be a monumental understatement. Played daily, and maybe for a while there hourly on the daily; you could pretty much give any Volcom staffer a Hockey Dad lyrical pop quiz and get a full chorus back in tune, on time and with a smile. The pre-mentioned penchant for the hourly HD listen over at Volcom HQ is exactly how this great partnership got all fired up. On a toe tapping session of Hockey Dad listening the Volcom crew got talking about how rad it would be to flow the HD dudes some gear, “we owe ‘em that much”...And so, into their DM’s Volcom did slide. An instant bonding over a favorite comment of “Shitchyeah” (all one word or it isn’t anywhere near as good) and a few very comical DM exchanges got a huge selection of Volcom Tee Shirts & Denim sent Hockey Dad’s way.  The duo was stoked with their pack and couldn’t believe the haul “you guys are nutcases! Ya sent down half the fkn shop! Thnx so much for the gear. It’s the best we’ve looked in years.” Guitarist Zach Stephenson and Drummer Billy Fleming, the two best mates that make up the incredibly likeable, relatable and infectiously awesome sound that is Hockey Dad wore the Volcom gear on their Album launch and then on their sold out national tour. Volcom loved seeing HD shred up stages in the clothes that looked so right it was as if they were designed just for them. Volcom & Hockey Dad went next level; beers were had, meals shared, gigs attended and now here we all are with an extremely happy announcement of a naturally awesome partnership. The decision to join Volcom wasn’t a hard one for Hockey Dad with the likes of life long idol; Surfer Ozzie Wright and fellow Musician and Surfer Noa Deane on the team, then there’s the Volcom history rich in ties with bands they love like Grinspoon and Pennywise. Hockey Dad knew they were at home with Volcom. Hockey Dad Play At The Metro, Sydney. Growing up on Australia’s East Coast in a little town called Windang NSW; Zach & Billy “Best mates first, band mates second” grew up playing music and surfing together. The title of Hockey Dad’s debut, “Boronia,” comes from the street where they once lived and began playing music together. The boys have played music together, dreamed together and made a reality of their passion together. They are the definition of Volcom brand ethos: True To This. “True To This” defines the irrational pursuit of following your passion. The relentless ambition to do what makes you feel most alive. Volcom proudly supports innovators and creative spirits and are deeply committed to self-expression. Hockey Dad as Volcom Brand Ambassadors sees them continuing to wear Volcom clothing on tours, joining in photoshoots, events, parties, surfing with the team and becoming part of the Volcom family; a partnership worthy of a collective “SHITCHYEAH”. SCOTTY JAMES OLYMPIC PODIUM PARTY
If you were in Australia over the past few weeks and you happened to turn on the TV or pick up a newspaper, no doubt you would have heard the name Scotty James more than a few times. Whilst you were enjoying the Aussie Summer, Scotty was in a very cold Korea representing Australia at the highest level in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Holding the Aussie flag and leading out the rest of the Australian team, Scotty made Australia proud. Most of Australia tuned in to support Scotty, embracing all those emotions as he competed in the Pipe, giving Australian’s the feeling of being right there on the slopes amongst the Korean snow. Scotty left Australia, a bloke from Warrandyte, VIC and came home a hero, becoming an Aussie legend to all those Australians that followed his journey to Korea, where he snagged Bronze in Men’s Pipe. To Volcom, Scotty has always been a hero and to show their gratitude to Scotty, whether they are Aussie, American or from anywhere in this extreme sports world - Volcom OZ and Easey Street Group put on a party to welcome back and congratulate Scotty in a way like no other. With Scotty’s family and friends on the guest list, along with Volcom family, you would have wished you were in Melbourne that night. As you enter the Easey Street venue, you were greeted with a glass of celebratory champagne from a bar that didn’t go dry the whole night. Tasty local beers were supplied by Goose Island and even tastier burgers from Easyes, accompanied by the best potato gems I have ever sampled. Our senses were being treated. At this stage, Scotty was definitely the most popular man in the house, with everyone there wanting to get a hold of that Olympic Bronze medal. I can tell you it was more than impressive, it’s the real deal with some solid weight behind it.  As the night went on and those attending got merrier and merrier, Volcom’s Shane Azar had a few surprises in store for Scotty. DJ - Sean James put the music on hold and all turned to the big screen where a mix of absolute legends across all sports congratulated Scotty on his Bronze from abroad. Just watching Scotty’s reactions to the video showed you just how special it was to him, a very touching piece indeed. To keep the emotions going, Shane presented Scotty with a one of a kind custom ring, crafted right here in Melbourne by Adam from Broken Lock. Unlike the Bronze medal, it could be worn everyday as a memento of Scotty’s achievement. A toast was had in the form of a “Garry Ablett”, a popular drink with the Volcom Snow Team (shot of coffee slammed into a beer then skulled in one hit). And then the madness began. The madness that is Barbarian... A metal band not from this century. Smoke, fire, blood sweat and some tears, a Barbarian show is like no other. If you were not Metal before the show, you are Metal now! The crowd participation was incredible, on what capped off an amazing night to celebrate an outstanding achievement by Scotty James. Words & Photos: Andrew Mapstone Party Video by: Neihana Tonkin Thanks to: Easey Street Group, Ivy Miller, Will Bowden, Pat Moore, Seth Hout, Jeff Kabigting, Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson, Tyler Allenvo, Dylan Alito, Simon Barratt, Arto Saari, Pat Barraza, Adam from Broken Lock, Easey Cheese Burgers, Goose Island Beer, Barbarian, Ryan Imegart, Todd Hymel, Alison Thomas, Nick Boon

SCOTTY JAMES SNOWBOARDING WITH TUNNEL VISION
Scotty James on snowboarding with a focused energy, a tunnel vision that stems from his addiction and love of the sport. Scotty James in an Australian-born snowboarder that has been hitting the slopes since his childhood. First competing on the international circuit when he was 13-years old, Scotty obtained a liking to halfpipe snowboarding and slopestyle events where over the years he has proven himself time and time again as a top contender and serious threat to the competition. Already a multi-time world champion of the sport and considered as one of the best snowboarders in the world, at 23-years old, Scotty James is just getting started. While Scotty primarily focuses on snowboard tricks that can relate to the halfpipe and slopestyle events, he is happiest when he is simply snowboarding, in any capacity. For Scotty James, being true to something is being true to your passion, and that passion is snowboarding. It's an addiction. It's his happiness. And he's damn good at it! What was the very first snowboard video you watched that got you hooked? SJ: I can't remember the first video I ever watched, but one that pops up in my head is JP Solberg's part from Transcendence in 2002 I believe. I was about eight-years old and watched that movie over and over again! What was it that made you like that video so much? SJ: I've always loved his style of riding and the bunny suit he wears through most of his part was pretty entertaining, especially for an eight-year old! How does that video still inspire you today? SJ: Transcendence and the riders in that movie still inspire me today because it was all about style and how good you could make tricks look without going upside down a thousand times. Riders like Gigi, Romain deMarchi, and Wolle Nyvelt all showed that style, above everything else, is gold. What activities are you into other than Snowboarding? SJ: I spend a lot of time surfing whenever I can. It's the only thing I can really do that relates to snowboarding. I've tried to skate, but I just end up in pain someway or another! Do those activities translate or influence your snowboarding in anyway? SJ: The fluidity and power that you see when watching surfers is definitely something that I think influences my riding. Working the board and enjoying the ride is what it's all about.
