Volcom Sustainability

VOLCOM NEW FUTURE

The Ongoing Journey of Turning Sustainability Commitments into Actions

At Volcom, we’ve been steadily integrating sustainability into the DNA of the company since the early days of Volcom Verde (our first eco-focused set of products in 2005), the Give Back Series and then the V.Co-logical Series. In fact, since 2012, sustainability has been an official part of our mission statement's core values and our commitments are in line with those of our parent company, Kering, whose leadership in sustainability-in-business is gaining global recognition for an ambitious set of initiatives across all its Luxury and Sport/Lifestyle brands.

Volcom Announces Surfrider Foundation 'Coastal Defender' Renewal And #GivingTuesday Membership Promotion
We are proud to continue our support of the Surfrider Foundation through the renewal of our "Coastal Defender" membership for 2017, a new program developed and launched at the end of last year that gives surf industry companies the opportunity to give back to the place where they work and play. In addition to the financial support provided through the "Coastal Defender" membership and our continued beach clean ups and other support initiatives, Volcom will initiate a Surfrider membership promotion beginning on #GivingTuesday, November 29th, with the goal of giving away 1,000 Surfrider Foundation memberships. The weeklong membership promotion ties directly to our "Giving Back" pledge to support and bring awareness to organisations like Surfrider who are meaningful to our stakeholders (that's you, that's us) by using Volcom as a platform. Surfrider, whose mission and work is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's ocean, waves and beaches from the threats of pollution, expanding industries & offshore development and climate change, is something we as a company directly benefit from. With the core of Volcom's brand built around the enjoyment of boardsports, surfing being a major one, it is important that we help support the work that Surfrider and their network of activists put in so that we are all able to continue to enjoy and benefit from the ocean and all that it provides. Without the tireless fight of Surfrider and the 11 other organisations that make up the Save San Onofre Coalition (SSOC), the recent success of the 11-year "Save Trestles" campaign would not have been a reality. An issue near and dear to the hearts of many at Volcom, this landmark "Save Trestles" victory will forever protect it from the Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) building or funding a road project within the area that includes San Onofre State Beach, the Richard and Donna O'Neill Conservancy and other critical open space, wildlife habitat and cultural resources in the San Mateo Creek watershed. To see Trestles with its deep-rooted history of memorable surfing events, as well as being the home of Volcom's own TCT Champs, forever protected from future roadway development, is so encouraging and serves a strong reminder that through sustained public resistance, a difference can be made. BUT it takes money, time and resources to fight these battles, so next Tuesday, November 29th, return to Volcom.com for further details on the Volcom X Surfrider Foundation membership promotion or follow us on our social to stay informed.

7th Annual Volcom X Patagonia Beach Cleanup - Tokyo, Japan!
Gloomy skies and rain were in the forecast, but once again, the skies opened up and we were blessed with beautiful weather for the 7th Annual Volcom X Patagonia Beach Cleanup in Tokyo, Japan, serving as a continued effort in our ongoing journey of turning sustainability commitments into actions! Together with local surf shop CHP and JEAN (Japan Environmental Action Network), 300+ volunteers, including families, children, and local riders, joined us at Ichinomiya Beach in the Chiba Prefecture to clean up the local coastlines of East Japan. Participants were greeted with a limited edition Volcom x Patagonia tee, which over the years has become such an honored collectable item it has been selling at a premium on auction sites in Japan. Photos by GEN   As participants brought waste back to the site, JEAN set up an area where they surveyed the variety of waste and educated the kids on the most prevalent things found on the Japanese shorelines. Silver Ribbon was also at the event and set up an amazing booth where participants could make a Volcom Stone purse or wallet, whose materials are sourced from recycled Volcom fabric swatches left over from previous season's sample products. Even Clam Art set up a booth to display their amazing creations!   With tons of free Sambazon drinks handed out to the hard-working participants, locally grown organic fruits, produce, coffee, and baked goods, the event had participants and families walking away with more than a couple free goodies: they walked away with a sense of accomplishment, a good deed, and tons of smiles for a great cause. Thanks to all the volunteers and participants: Shell Shine workshop "Clam Art," Silver Ribbon Japan & Yumegaoka DC, local production for yeast bread Nao, Nachuraroha, Sunny And, Pot Satsuki, AKYU SurfBoardCase, Ambessa & Co, Ancora Pizza Napoletana, Atlantic Coffee Stand, Cocoua, Comet, CHP, GEN, JEAN, Lilia Ando YAYA, Mind, Patagonia Japan, Patagonia Surf Chiba, Sambazon, Sewcean, Smile Smile, and Sunrise Ando Yonrise Locals.

Volcom Announces New Future
The Ongoing Journey Of Turning Sustainability Commitments Into Actions Following the results of a recent report from Volcom’s parent company Kering on the group’s ambitious 2012-2016 sustainability targets, Volcom has released an update on their progress and a detailed plan outlining the path forward. Building on the success of these targeted efforts, Volcom is continuing to refine and focus its sustainability initiatives in a progressive program called New Future. Sustainability efforts began humbly at Volcom back in 2005 and three years ago, the brand aligned with Kering’s broader sustainability commitments and outlined a list of their own goals: undertaking a yearly Environmental Profit & Loss (E P&L) analysis, a reduction of emissions, waste, and water use, and making Volcom surfing events Deep Blue™ certified, among others. Since then, Volcom has followed through on four E P&L analyses, eliminated PVC from the product supply chain, increased the amount of sustainable materials in the product mix, and achieved Deep Blue Surfing Event™ certification from the non-profit Sustainable Surf for its major surf events. Utilizing E P&L analysis and working in partnership with the Kering sustainability team, Volcom has gained valuable practical insights to streamline the product supply chain while reducing impacts on the ecosystem. The lessons of this focused approach will guide the brand’s sustainability strategy going forward, in the comprehensive New Future program. The New Future program is a 360-degree sustainability plan driven by Volcom’s vision of Strong Oceans + Stable Climate + Smart Society. By combining key factors that include Responsible Manufacturing, Impact Evaluation (E P&L), and Giving Back, New Future provides the roadmap for Volcom’s future. With renewed and evolving goals, Volcom has set its sights on better fiber sourcing—using more recycled content and organics, integrated brand messaging, New Future training to all employees, and consideration for end-of-life of all products. Additionally, the brand has recruited former VP of Sustainability Derek Sabori’s new agency, The Underswell, for continued advice and strategic support to fully implement this plan. "As our efforts continue to deepen, we’d like to focus in on a meaningful pathway that will highlight our commitment to responsible manufacturing, drive favorable results in our E P&L, and resonate positively with our customers. We believe our New Future roadmap does just that," said Todd Hymel, CEO of Volcom. Volcom became a Fair Labor Association member in 2014, and shares this and all their other sustainability updates at: volcom.com.au/sustainability
New Future
The Underswell To Serve as Volcom's Sustainability Advisor
Volcom is proud to announce that the newly formed firm, The Underswell, will serve as the brand's Sustainability Advisor helping to accelerate our journey to sustainability. Founded by former Volcom Vice President of Sustainability, Derek Sabori, The Underswell will coordinate Volcom's global sustainability efforts with a strong focus on the recently announced "2020 Sustainability Targets" and the roadmap developed to help meet them. Having spent more than 19 years working at Volcom, with the last 6 of those serving as the Vice President and/or Sr. Director of Sustainability, Derek is branching out to pursue a new challenge that takes his passion for sustainability beyond Volcom, to help more groups, organizations and personalities on their own journeys to sustainability. "It's up to us now, as a company to truly adopt and embrace sustainability as a tenant of our business, as a core value, and as a brand differentiating opportunity. I'm looking forward to the further strengthening of what we will continue to call our New Future program, and welcome Derek in his new role and wish him the best as he starts a new chapter." – Todd Hymel CEO For more on Volcom's sustainability efforts, please visit volcom.com.au/sustainability.

Volcom Hawaii Pipe Houses Fueled by Solar Electricity!
Did you know that the Volcom Hawaii Pipe Houses (North Shore, Oahu) have solar panels installed on the roofs of both houses? Earlier this year, we finished installing tons of new panels on the houses in prime locations to maximize our solar electricity potential. Good for the environment, good for the local community. A huge thanks goes out to Rising Sun Solar for their tremendous product, and to deem the Volcom houses the very first surf brand houses on Oahu's North Shore to be #SponsoredByTheSun! Over the recent years, solar panels have gained attention due to the vast amounts of business and residential owners installing them on their property in order to offset their electrical bill. Contrary, some of their initial setup costs have been a bit pricey, but the cost in the long-run, which we should all think in terms of, will have less money feeding your electric bill and more money in your pocket. Volcom's journey to sustainability first starts in a New Future state-of-mind, a mindset that's destined to turn our strong sustainability commitments into heartfelt actions. Since integrating our sustainability core values into our official mission statement, we have made great strides in implementing eco-friendly operations and products into the market to ensure Volcom does its part to help preserve the oceans, beaches, mountains, and cities in which we live and work. Turning Recycled Bottles Into Volcom Boardshorts!
Volcom Mod-Tech Boardshorts, a staple in the Volcom line and refined over the years through rugged team-rider testing and critique, is proudly developed in a partnership with Repreve, a recycled fiber that is made from recycled materials including used plastic bottles. An estimated 5 plastic bottles are used when producing a pair of Volcom Mod-Tech boardshorts. Recycled polyester uses nearly half the energy that virgin polyester does and helps reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions during manufacturing by about 45%. This offsets the need to use new resources such as petroleum, while emitting fewer greenhouse gases. Repreve recycled fiber In the past year, much of our focus has been on building our New Future roadmap, a guide that addresses our impacts, the forces behind those impacts, and the means to aggressively address what we believe is the foundation of Volcom's environmental sustainability commitment. Mod-Tech boardshorts are made for the believers of tomorrow. The eager optimists pushing for a change. And that change is included in these boardshorts showcased with the Repreve recycled fiber. New Future: Social Responsibility & Philanthropy
When we talk about sustainability and the New Future, it can’t be discussed without recognition of the people that make our products and the communities where we do business. When it comes to manufacturing our products, we can all agree the products we buy, should not come at the cost of workers’ rights, health and or safety. Additionally, the places we do business are made up of communities all over the world, and we truly enjoy the opportunity to engage with them, and support the great initiatives within them, in many different ways. Here are a few of those stories from 2015: Fair Labor Association Member The Fair Labor Association believes that all goods should be produced fairly and ethically, and brings together three key constituencies – universities, civil society organizations (CSOs) and companies – to find sustainable solutions to systemic labor issues. We were first granted membership in 2014, and our commitment continues. Learn more at http://www.fairlabor.org. Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii has been a partner for our Give Back Series in Hawaii since 2010 and each year at the Volcom Pipe Pro, we reward them the donation check made up of the funds we have raised through the year. We also support their Ocean Awareness day in the summer and get athletes and staff involved in volunteer efforts. We love their mission:  Inspiring young people to become responsible citizens by providing a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences, hope and opportunity. The Sheckler Foundation In 2015, we once again offered exclusive collab product at Tilly’s, specifically to raise money and support for Ryan Sheckler's foundation that supports great causes that directly benefit and enrich the lives of children and injured action sports athletes, inspiring them to “Be the Change.” Sion Milosky Memorial Fund Honoring the legacy of legendary Big Wave surfer, Sion Milosky who passed away doing what he loved, our Live Like Sion products, and Volcom Pipe Pro merchandise raise funds to support his family and legacy since his passing. Mauli Ola Foundation Once again, we partnered with Mauli Ola Foundation to raise awareness and funds for this great group who is dedicated to providing hope and confidence to individuals living with genetic diseases. Harnessing the healing powers of the ocean, they introduce surfing and ocean-based activities as natural therapies. Hope you got a pair of the Mo Benefit Boardshorts while they were available. San Onofre Parks Foundation The San Onofre Parks Foundation is a non-profit, whose mission is to provide education and interpretive services regarding all aspects of the natural, cultural, historical and biological diversity of California State Parks at San Onofre and San Clemente State Beaches; promoting environmental awareness and ethics; and enhancing the quality of recreation experience at these unique coastal parks. At our TCT Championships held at Trestles, we worked closely with the foundation to promote their work, operate within their guidelines, and raise funds for their cause through donation of 100% of the profits of our ‘True To Trestles’ merchandise. Boarding for Breast Cancer B4BC advocates early detection and a healthy, active lifestyle as the best means for breast cancer prevention. Founded in 1996, B4BC empowers young people to make positive choices that promote lifelong wellness through outreach, prevention and support programs. Since 2010, products in our snow line have raised awareness and funds for B4BC. This year was no different with a high profile collection done in collaboration with an exclusive print done by Featured Artist Vanessa Stark. Give Clean Water Give Clean Water partners with local community organizations throughout Fiji to identify families in need of clean water filters. They then gather biographical and demographic information from each recipient family, take photos and mark each house with a GPS address. During the days of our Volcom Fiji Pro, we worked with Give Clean Water to ensure local villages and schools had access to good, clean water. We’re happy to help sustain the programs we put in place as far back as 2012. Additionally, thanks to Mizu, a portion of the sales from Volcom branded Mizu water bottles go back to supporting their program as well. TACA (Talk About Curing Autism) An amazing organization providing support, community and services for families with autism, TACA has been a partner of ours for years. From one of our earliest Give Back Series Tees back in 2008, to the Family Skate Days at our Volcom HQ Skate Park, to our first ever Volcom.com #GivingTuesday campaign to raise awareness for them as well as funds, working with TACA is always a joy. Visit www.taca.com to learn more about autism and how it affects (very likely) someone you know. Costa Mesa Foundation The Costa Mesa Foundation provides the financial and human capital to initiate and support programs that enhance our local community at the grassroots level. They also hold a free, Concerts in the Park summertime concert series that we’re happy to be a continuing sponsor of. SOY (Save Our Youth) Costa Mesa For the 3rd year running, Volcom has sponsored SOY’s SURF DAYS event. Training kids in the surf, exposing them to the beach culture, and offering career mentor chats from surf legends Alex Gray and Chris Bertish (thanks guys!). As you can imagine, this is one of our most fun and most rewarding events of the summer. Save Our Youth (SOY) is a local youth mentoring & college prep organization for underrepresented youth in the area surrounding Volcom HQ. Krochet Kids intl. Back in 2011, we launched our first of many collaborative projects in support of theses visionaries. Through a unique model Krochet Kids intl. (KKi) are empowering the women of Northern Uganda and Peru with the assets, skills, and knowledge to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. The result is long lasting and sustainable change. One of their hashtags: #knowwhomadeit. We didn't collaborate on product this year, but we were happy to send in some financial support to help sustain their programs. Remember this video? SOS Outreach SOS Outreach is a youth development nonprofit that fosters self-confidence, leadership skills, and positive decision-making in underserved youth. SOS programs are unique in their use of adventure sports to engage participants for future success. For the past few years, we’ve been able to donate 20-30 outerwear kits (jackets & pants) to help keep the kids (and instructors) stay warm on the mountain. Give Jeans A Chance Our Give Jeans a Chance program started back in 2009 with the vision of collecting clean, quality, unwanted or unused jeans from our customers and then distributing them to local homeless shelters in our community. The campaign still lives on, specifically in Japan and France where it continues to be a meaningful grassroots campaign. Might be time to bring it back to North America ;) Full Circle Japan Volcom Japan has established a strong relationship with the non-profit organization Full Circle, an organization committed to getting people with disabilities back into sport. For us, surfing, snow riding, and rolling in skateparks hit home, and we’re proud of the volunteer hours, and the commitment the team in Japan has made to this great cause. Women’s Shelter Support (Manly, Australia) In line with the focus of the Kering Foundation, the team in Australia has made a commitment to supporting the local women’s refuge centers in their area through in-kind donations for different events.
New Future
New Future - Environmental Sustainability
The environmental impacts of operating and producing goods globally is significant. We recognize that, and for the last 10 years have been slowly (but steadily) building sustainability and management of our impacts into our business. We’re nowhere near perfect – that goes without saying – and while there’s still a long road ahead of us, here are a few things we’d like to share with you as we look back on 2015. When we look at our impacts, we’re considering everything we can from start to finish; from raw materials to the finished products that end up on your body (and then what you do with them afterwards).
New Future
New Future – Built on Partnerships
In the early days of our New Future program – mostly thanks to the 1% for the Planet partnership we had through our V.Co-logical Series – and before we started taking a look introspectively at our product, we reached out to non-profit partners that were doing inspiring work in spaces relevant to our business. We established valued friendships, and in the process learned a lot. Even with our efforts to reduce our impacts steering strongly towards our products and the supply chain, we know that aligning with strategic partners is important; we also know these are the groups, many of them volunteer driven, that are doing the heavy lifting and creating the change of mindset in the communities where we’re doing business. So hat’s off to them; we’re proud to be in such good company… Surfrider Foundation Back in 2010 we began our annual partnership with the Surfrider Foundation. Since then, we’ve worked with local chapters in different ways, including offering the Manly, Australia chapter a rent-free home in our Volcom Australia HQ, and have for years now sponsored an annual beach clean up here at our local beach with the Huntington Beach/Seal Beach Chapter. This year, however, we felt it was time to up our commitment a bit so when Surfrider came to us with a proposal for the industry to join at a more committed level, and become a part of an exclusive club, we jumped right on it. So, in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation, Volcom is proud to announce our appointment as a Surf Industry Coastal Defender – a new initiative that allows companies within the surf industry to join forces to support Surfrider's efforts to protect the world's ocean, waves and beaches. We’re proud to wear this badge showing our elevated level of support and if you haven’t already, consider becoming a member to Surfrider Foundation so you too can support campaigns across the country like Beach Access, Coastal Preservation, Clean Water, Ocean Protection, and Plastic Pollution. Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii Inspiring local communities to care for their coastlines through hands-on beach cleanups – that’s what Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is up to. We couldn’t do what we do at the Volcom Pipe Pro without them. We’re glad to have them on board, and were even more stoked when Executive Director Kahi Pacarro chose us as his uniform of choice while out doing research on national marine sanctuary/monuments Papahanaumokuakea and Midway islands. Pangeaseed Foundation x World Oceans Day Hawaii World Oceans Day is June 8th, and for the last two years we’ve been a proud sponsor of the Pangeaseed World Ocean’s Day Hawaii event featuring activities, talks and a film festival. This year, we donated t-shirts for their World Oceans Day Hawaii messages. With a mission of “harnessing the power of contemporary art and its tremendous influence on popular culture to generate awareness, stimulate dialogue, change perception and inspire positive change around pressing ocean environmental issues,” it's a perfect fit. Newport Bay Conservancy Coastal Clean Up Sponsor Right here in our backyard is the Newport Bay and the Newport Bay Conservancy. The bay naturally collects water from the inland watershed and acts as a filter before it makes its way into our local beaches and surfing spots. When they asked, years ago, for us to help them with their Back Bay clean up on Coastal Clean Up Day, we were glad to help. For years now, we’ve been working with our manufacturing partners to ensure that there are Volcom x Coastal Clean Up tees available for the volunteers who come out that day. Ron Jon’s Beach N’ Boards Fest Sea Oats Restoration We were beyond stoked when Ron Jon’s asked us to be a sustainability partner at their 2015 Beach N’ Boards Fest. Together, with Ron Jon’s and the non-profit Keep Brevard Beautiful (KBB), we enlisted athletes and volunteers to plant native sea oats on the dune line. Sea oats are a vital part of the local ecosystem. They promote dune growth and provide natural protection from damaging beach erosion. The program invited spectators to work alongside athletes of the event to physically plant over 500 pre-sprouted sea oats. Beach & Mountain Clean Up Series The Summer Daze beach clean up series started as an initiative in partnership with Keepers of the Coast to clean up the beaches in Florida after the 4th of July holiday…they stuck and have become a staple. They add to the Beach Clean Ups we do here with Surfrider Foundation Seal Beach/Huntington Beach chapter, and the ones we do on our own on International Surf Day.  You’ll also find beach clean ups in Japan, and Hong Kong. We all know, however, that litter doesn't just affect our surf spots – how about the mountains after an epic winter? Never really thought if it, right? Well our team in Japan does every year and this year teamed up with Eco-S and Patagonia for a co-op event that has proven to be a relationship that continues on! Save the Waves Foundation Environmental Surf Film Festival Sponsor Save the Waves was one of the first organizations we were able to donate to when we kicked off our 1% for the Planet partnership which ran through 2014. We’ve donated to them for years to support their programs and their mission of protecting ecosystems around the world in partnerships with local communities, utilizing a unique combination of protected areas, economics, and direct action. This year, we were proud to be a supporting sponsor of their Save the Waves Film Festival; the world’s only surf & environmental film festival.
