WEEK 15: EASY LOVE – “THE ECHO”

Justine Brown was already known as the great drummer and vocalist in her sister Chelsea’s band, Summer Twins, when she formed Easy Love. “I started Easy Love about two years ago when I started writing my own songs,” says Justine. “Now I have a live band and I recorded an album and released it with Burger.” Justine played all the instruments on Easy Love’s self-titled debut album that was released in February.

Justine’s relationship with Burger Records goes back practically to the beginning. “We used to play with Sean and Lee’s band, Thee Makeout Party,” explains Justine. “It was before they had the record store, so a long time ago.” The Burger Records store opened in October 2009. Burger co-founder Lee Rickard remembers, “Justine is one of my favorite people. We’ve known her since her teenage days in the Riverside girl garage band The Scandells! We’ve also been in love with the Summer Twins since their inception and have released their amazing catalog on LP, CD, 7″ vinyl and cassette.”

"We had to pay our dues and work our way up and it eventually led to playing the Burgerama Stage."

Since the early days, Justine has found her place in the Burger universe and has travelled along on tours like the Burger Caravan, playing shows that featured eclectic lineups. “That’s what I like about Burger, the variety of music... people from all over,” she says. “We had to pay our dues and work our way up and it eventually led to playing the Burgerama stage... which was, like, hundreds of people. It was kind of scary.” Lee adds, “Justine is always creating, constantly evolving, growing ever so lovely.”

Easy Love is admittedly a little less rambunctious than some of their Burger label mates. “We definitely have a different kind of style,” says Justine. “I feel like we’re not as super punk and, like, crazy... as people and as musicians... a little bit more mellow, but we definitely can rock out!”
