Week 14: Distractor - "Six Foot Moon"

Somewhere around mid-to-late 2014, in vocalist and trumpeter Glen's garage, keyboardist Will Sipos came up with a catchy melody on one of his tiny toy synths leftover from the 80s. Glen began singing along and unexpectedly, this turned into the first Distractor song. Glen came up with the band name and that's how the band begun. The idea was to play fun and simple music to distract from the harsh realities of life. Colin Mckibbin was usually there in the garage with them and joined Distractor on the ukulele. Soon after, Ronnie Dunmore on guitar and Sean Campos on bass joined the band. "We played our first legitimate show at La Cave in Costa Mesa to a sold-out crowd," remembers Ronnie. "Glen would play miniature blaring trumpet solos in between verses, while we played along reading our handwritten sheet music. It was a lot of fun."

Distractor's first album Devotion was released in March 2015 and currently preparing the release of the Six Foot Moon EP, which was recorded at Volcom Studio. "We have the second album mixed and ready to be mastered, so just waiting on plans for the release on that," says Ronnie. "We’re very excited!"

Distractor were quickly dealing with a tragedy that almost ended the band. "Right when we found clear direction and reasoning for what we wanted to be as a band, we lost our captain," explains Ronnie. Glen passed away in October 2015 after only a year of guiding the ship. "Glen's approach to music was not normal. He didn't really want to start a band in the first place, so the ideas and emotions he brought to the table were very funny and inspiring." Ronnie describes the loss as "a period of time when we felt lost.. we had to somehow fill his shoes without actually putting them on." Guitarist and vocalist Levi Prairie joined the band to help with vocals and added new flavor to the music. This new lineup initially performed under a different name. "We needed to keep playing music together and we knew it wasn't in the form of Distractor," he explains. "We let Distractor rest in the garage for a year and brought a new name, Blue Flowers, out to shows. At the time, we thought we may never play as Distractor again until one day we decided to test this new musical bond we developed with Levi by starting from scratch and writing all new material. We were even able to include some of Glen's lyrics and unfinished songs. Now that we were all contributing, it started to feel like Distractor again and we feel that Glen would be proud to see us playing these new songs. So here we are."

Since falling into the Burger Records fold, Distractor has embraced the label ethos and made the most of the relationship. "It's been great working with Burger. We are honored that they have taken us under their wing," says Will. "They set us up with some shows at SXSW which was fun. We like being able to share our music with all the Burger fans and also playing alongside some whacky and talented bands. Burger has become something bigger than just a record label and we're all lucky to have this type of thing to enjoy and contribute to in our lives."

"Distractor is one of our favorite bands," says Burger Records' Sean Bohrman. "It's like Devo and Talking Heads in outer space. When we first met Distractor we booked them for one of our local shows, but found out that the lead singer, Glen Christiansen, had passed away unexpectedly at the age of 25. Distractor carries on in memory of Glen and continues to blow minds and spread the love of the Spaceman. The story of Distractor is one too long to tell in this brief blurb, so please watch this short doc on one of our favorite bands!"

He was tagging "Aliens Was Here" all over town. He even painted his face for each surf and I think it scared everyone off in the line up, which resulted in heaps of waves! Ozzie Wrong transforming Uluwatu's racetrack into Planet Zorb. RICHIE OLIVARES: "Believe it or not, but this car was a rental! I think it gave us good luck and it became a wave magnet. We had to pay for the car to be repainted when we gave it back, but it was totally worth it. Many would say that it upped the value of the car." OBLIVION STONEYS BOARDSHORTS - GET YOURS HERE Spotted the first extraterrestrial of the trip. "It was the first time I'd ever seen an elephant in person and it was insane. MAG VIBES STONEYS BOARDSHORTS GONY ZUBIZARRETA: "I forgot my travel bag in Lisbon airport at the x-ray machine just before flying to Bali, so I had to borrow shorts and shirts from William, Leon and Miguel (thanks boyz). We had to divide the group and the goofy footers went to Java, so we went to Yoyo's! I really enjoyed the trip to Sumbawa with Droid, Mauro and Pat. The guys were ripping! It was impressive to see the talent and clean surfing of Mauro, the crazy different approach of Droid on every wave riding weird boards, and the power and pop of Pat, especially on his twin fin." "BASICALLY, WE JUST SURFED OUR BRAINS OUT FOR A WEEK AND THEN HAD A LITTLE GOODBYE PARTY IN CANGGU TO FINISH THE TRIP THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE." -GONY Gony Zubizarreta dropped a couple wallets, but was able to pick them up shortly after. The little car that could. Ozzie face-painted the entire trip. Every night consisted of listening to Distractor over and over, Bintangs, and art tutorial with Ozzie. It was like a big kid sleepover! LONGO, HAAKONSEN AND FRIENDS IN OLIVIER GITTLER’S INTROSPECTION
OLIVIER IS A MAN OF MANY TALENTS. AT RIDING HIS SNOWBOARD, FILMING, EDITING, MAKING MUSIC, OR CELEBRATING LIFE, HE CONSTANTLY EXCELS. Oh, Oli's also the reigning Quarter Pipe World Champion, although he'll never admit to it. It’s no secret that a 30-second Instagram clip is usually a condensed version of a week-long trip around the world to document a specific goal. Whether it's a trick for a video part, a photo for the mags, field testing product, or any other reason to chase a winter storm. But, what about all the shenanigans in between? From airplanes to rental cars, hotel rooms to summits, and everything in between, sometimes the moments that define these trips are caught in-between takes. Volcom ambassador Olivier Gittler, with his strong appreciation for behind-the-scenes footage, put together this unique look at a season untold with Arthur Longo, Terje Haakonsen and friends.  "IT’S WHAT WE LOVE TO DO. ALL THE THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN WE TRAVEL FOR SNOWBOARDING. THE SPONTANEOUS PART OF TRAVELING AROUND THAT NO ONE ELSE SEES." – OLIVIER GITTLER Oli double exposure photo by Adailton Oli Mike and Jeff shot by Vernon Deck Oli Mike and Jeff shot by Vernon Deck music recording setup iphone Oli and Arthur iphone Oli close up shot by Arthur Oli forest iphone Oli Mt Blanc iphone Oli photo by Adailton Oli setup iphone Oli shot by Longo - Crater Lake Super 8 Paulina Lake iphone

EURO THRASH VIDEO: VOLCOM SURF’S EUROPEAN VACATION
Our good friends at Wasted Talent put together a video of some of our riders: Noa Deane, Ryan Burch, Gony Zubizarreta, and more, thrashing their way through Portugal, Spain, and France during their summer '17 European vacation. From scoring one of the best days of surf they've ever seen at The Cave, to touring the local watering holes and taverns, to getting caught up in a weird presidental campaign in Paris, there was no shortage of amusement and European debauchery. It was a great trip that surely lived up to its name: Euro Thrash. The team riders, photographers, and crew, all became great friends by the end of the trip and ended on a promise to all return back soon. Euro Thrash 2.0? Enjoy the video!
